As Dot Day is approaching and we STEAM / STEAM teachers want to integrate this amazing day with activities that include or integrate science, technology, art, and mathematics, we are celebrating Dot Day with this fun and hands-on STEM Tower Challenge! Children will use only toothpicks and play dough to design and build their own tower. They will plan, build, test, and improve their design while having fun, and the amazing thing is that free worksheets are included at the bottom.

This Dot Day STEM/STEAM activity seems very simple, with no fancy materials, but the outcomes are marvellous. You will see students' ideas, and they will not only engage but also enjoy and learn through fun. We personally like this, and our kids do too. You know, simple materials build a strong engineering foundation. way to bring STEM, science, engineering, and problem-solving into the classroom. Students will explore how gravity, forces, balance, stability, and strong structures help a tower stand.

What Is Dot Day?

International Dot Day is celebrated on September 15. It is inspired by the book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. Dot Day encourages children to be creative, try new ideas, take chances, and make their own mark.

In the classroom, children can celebrate Dot Day through art, STEM challenges, and creative activities that encourage them to share their ideas and see what they can create.

WHAT IS THE STEM TOWER CHALLENGE?

The challenge is simple: Can you build the tallest free-standing tower using only toothpicks and play dough?

Materials

1. Toothpicks
2. Play dough

Your Challenge

Build the tallest tower you can!

Your tower must:

Be free-standing
Be stable and stay standing
Not be stuck, taped, or attached to the table
After drying, you should be able to carefully move it from one place to another without it falling apart.

How to Build Your Tower

Make small balls out of play dough and let them dry slightly.
Connect the toothpicks by gently pushing them into the play dough balls, then let them stabilize for some time.
Start with a strong base so your tower can stand.
Build one level upward at a time.
Keep checking your tower as you build.
If your tower falls, try again and change your design.
Make your tower as tall as you can.
Your tower must be free-standing and stay standing on its own.

STEM Class Safety Rules

Handle toothpicks carefully because they have sharp ends.
Do not run or play with toothpicks.
Keep toothpicks pointing down or away from yourself and others.
Do not put toothpicks in your mouth.
Pass toothpicks carefully and never point them at anyone.
Use only the materials given for the challenge.
Clean up any broken toothpicks immediately with your teacher's help.
Work carefully and respectfully with your team.
When finished, return all materials to the correct place.

Students will first plan their tower, then build and test it. They will measure the height, see if their tower stays stable, find problems, and make changes to improve their design.

This hands-on engineering challenge gives children a chance to use their own ideas, solve problems, learn from mistakes, and try again. It is a fun way to learn about science, structures, balance, and the engineering design process.
